Dr. Naomi Sacks, HEORStrategies Vice President, is a co-author on a recently published study, “Impact of Demographics and Insurance Coverage on Schizophrenia Treatment and Healthcare Resource Utilization Within an Integrated Healthcare System.” Using electronic health record data from MedStar Health, an integrated delivery system in the Baltimore-Washington, DC, area, Dr. Sacks and co-authors found high rates of hospitalization, especially among younger patients and those with Medicaid coverage. While most patients were prescribed anti-psychotics, rates of prescribing second-generation long-acting injectible drugs were very low (9.0%), with even lower rates among elderly patients and Medicaid beneficiaries. Their findings may indicate inconsistencies in care across subgroups defined by age and insurance coverage type.
